Why Tasks Get Lost in Chat Apps (And How to Fix It)

WhatsApp, Slack, and Teams are great for communication — but terrible for task management. We analysed 10,000 users to understand why tasks disappear in chat.

Chat Is Ephemeral by Design

Messages are designed to flow past. A task buried under memes and replies has no structure, no status, and no owner — it's just text that will be forgotten.

The 10,000-User Pattern

Across our user analysis, the pattern was consistent: tasks mentioned in chat got completed less than half the time, while tasks with an explicit owner and status were almost always finished.

The Fix: Move the Task Out of the Thread

Keep chat for talking and use a dedicated task tracker for commitments. When a task gets its own record with an owner and a status, it survives the conversation that created it.

Key Takeaways

  • Chat is for conversation, not commitments.
  • Unstructured tasks get forgotten — consistently.
  • Give every task an owner and a status.
